Online Sketchbook Prompt Twenty-Four

Kaylynn Deveney
P. Jays Drying from the series The Day-to-Day Life of Albert Hastings, C-print mounted to aluminum, 2001-06

What is going on in this image? What type of composition was used to create this piece? Would you define this work as documentary? Why or why not?

I would define it as documentary because he is doing laundry/chores and that is somehting everyone does during the day.I think he looks really creepy. =P

I would say it's definitely documentary. The info. about the image says it's from a Day-to-Day life series, so it documents the typical day of Albert Hastings. The chore in this image is drying pajamas. Framing is a strong compositional element used in the photograph. I think if the old man were to be beside the pants entirely instead of between the legs, the image wouldn't be as interesting to look at.

this photo is super duper!! the first thing i see is the old guy ironing or something, then i notice the the pants hanging, the pants almost seem to frame the old guy int the picture

In this image it looks as if the guy is ironing his clothes. I think the composition being used is lighting. I think it is a documentry of the guy.

I would definitely define this photo as a documentary photograph. Its seems as if the photographer is catching this man on a regular day.

I love how the pair of pants frame his body and what he's doing. It really draws attention to him and what he is doing.

I think that in this image an elderly man is just going about his normal day and working on his housely chores. The pants that are hanging on the wire frame the man and make him the main focus in the photograph. I think I would define this as documentary because if the photographer took more photos of the man as he goes about his day it would be interesting to see what this elderly man does to pass the time.

I would say it is definitely documentary because he is doing his things like laundry and other things like everyone other else do. he looks like upset and poor or something like that. i think this photo is allright...because there is nothing speical in that photo..just pants hang up right there and the man stands behind of it....its ok tho.

In the picture, there is a man who has just washed his clothes and is hanging them to dry. It looks like a portrait. This is a documentary because it's a moment in time where to him, it was a regular day, but now times have changed, and most people just throw it in the dryer or take their clothes to the cleaners.

A man is doing his laundry, simply going about his day to day activities. It's definitely documentary, the activity is so commonplace and ordinary, yet the photography brought out an artistic side of the event.

A man is drying and/or ironing his clothes on an ironing board. The composition that i think was used to make this piece was rule of thirdsI would definitely define this image as documentary because it fulfills the role of a documentary series since it follows a person or an event and records what happens at a given place or time

This image is grossing me out when I look at it, I dont know why. Maybe the dirty nighties is doing it. But I realy dont understand it because I cant read at all the writing under the picture, looks like a two year old scribbled. It looks like a documentary because it's just a I guess ordinary man doing what looks like his laudry or something. I hate it!
