Sketchbook Prompt Seven

Prompt: What are your reactions to the work? Do you find the series interesting? Why or why not? What is going on in the imagery? Choose the image that you find most interesting to write about in more depth. Why is that particular image striking to you? Label your description so that others can refer to your chosen piece. The top image is one, the second is two, and so on.

Enchanted Spacesphotographs and text by Marrigje de Maar
I am a restless traveler, who keeps on leaving, but never arrives.

I have been taking pictures of interiors since 2002. In the beginning I worked in worn out, rejected buildings, later I concentrated on private homes.Interiors tell stories about people. In public space people follow the global trends and fashions. In their homes they tend to make other choices. The private space is the only place where we are ourselves. The personal story is told inside the privacy of our home.

I never travel along a pre-fixed route. My trips are guided by intuition and by experiences along the way. Roads that attract me, people I meet and stories I hear. The doors I choose to knock on rarely hold a clue about what I may find inside.I never visualize anything beforehand and my pictures reflect my first impressions. The image comes alive in the existing light.

Many of my interiors give evidence of a frugal life, of inhabitants who are able to make their personalities known with only a few means. In my work I concentrate on this authenticity and dignity. My pictures tell a story about these people, a story that reaches beyond material reality.
Everything visible in the picture was there. I never change anything. I only use the available light. I use colour negative film and print both analog and digital. During this process no drastic changes are made either.

When i look at these pictures i see loneliness. An empty house with old and ruined stuff on the inside. It's also pretty creepy to look at. I like that.

This is an interesting series. It makes me wonder, what kind of people live in these old, possibly worn down houses?

In this series i see a very worn out, old-school house, with a a tiny touch of modern in it. The t.v in some of the images show that people still live there, and it is in the more modern time.

I find the fifth image very interesting. I like how its very dark, and everything is made of wood.

This series is very interesting. The colors are what really grab my attention. The differences in these scenes are very noticeable with plenty of detail. I feel the textures that these images display. It seems that I can feel the wood and the dusty furniture. These compositions seem to show households of different kinds. Some homes seem to stand out more then the others, which is one reason why I have such an interest in this series.

The second image appears to be the brightest; therefore it is the attention seeker. It reminds me of certain independent films that I have seen. It seems like a common setting that reflects many other references. When I study it more closely, I have a strong belief that it was taken in a different country because I notice less and less of American similarities. Some of these differences are the bed, the door, and the (what looks like a) refrigeration device.

When I see these images I think of abandoned old homes. They have no life in them. Their stuff is falling apart. I also like how all the images have the same theme but are still different. I thought the 2nd image was interesting, if you look closely at the floor on the left side you see a spot that stick out. That spot looks like a secret compartment. I also think of feeling cold since these houses look like they get VERY cold during the winter so it makes me wonder how these people live in these houses.

I really like this series and I find it very interesting. My favorite picture is the second one. I like how the room looks kind of neglected, and I like how both the door and ceiling are patterned. It gives the room a cool effect. I would love to be able to go into people's houses and take pictures of their rooms and see how they live.

My first reactions when i look at the images is who lives here and where is this located. The series is very intresting it shows how difrent living situations are for some people. Also how eventhough the house is old and torn most of the rooms look clean to how their conditions are it makes me think that these people appreciate what they have even if its not all new or great quality.

My favorite image is the last one where the tv is on. It just made me realy pay attention to the surroundings and seeing that in the wall they had a poster of what seems is a god that they worship. Also looking at the tv and seeing an asin woman on it made me believe that perhaps the location is in asia.
